From Volendam, you can take a boat to the former island village of Marken, which has been connected to the mainland by a causeway since 1957. This peaceful fishing village in the Markermeer is famous for its wooden houses built on stilts, its typical drawbridges, and the traditional life of its (former) island inhabitants.
