About this experience

Hike up one of Japan's most active volcanoes! Learn about past volcanic eruptions of Mt. Usu and discover the nature of Lake Toya! Visit the best viewpoint of Lake Toya and get some photos!

This tour differs by not just hiking the volcano, but also by visiting Lake Toya and the Toyo-Usu Geopark Center. There you can learn about the volcano you climbed, its recent volcanic eruption in 2000, its lasting effects on the local area, and Lake Toya's nature and geology.

This tour also has a max number of 4 people, keeping the groups small ensures more time for each customer to enjoy the tour and not to be rushed. Also, it ensures safety whilst hiking on the mountain.

We also includes pick-up and drop-off which other tour companies do not provide. The tour is suitable for anyone who loves the outdoors, is interested in volcanoes and their destructive power and anyone who loves lakes.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1

After pickup, we will drive to the trailhead of Mt. Usu. We will then hike through beautiful forests until we reach the crater rim. There you can see the crater with its volcanic activity and also get a superb view of Lake Toya and Uchiura Bay. We will then have lunch and rest while enjoying the scenery. We will then continue back down the same route and back to the car.

We will visit the Toyo-Usu Geopark Visitor Center next to Lake Toya to learn about Mt. Usu's past eruptions and to understand Lake Toya's nature.

Stop 3

We will go to the best viewpoint of Lake Toya where you can see the lake and also Mt. Usu and the craters from the eruption in 2000. This is a great photo spot!
