It contains the remains of the explorer and conquistador Juan Ponce de León, as well as the martyr San Pío. It contains some relics such as those of the ornaments and vestments worn by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Puerto Rico in 1984.

The Castillo San Felipe del Morro, or El Morro, was the second fort built on the islet of what is now Old San Juan and Puerta de Tierra
