About this experience

This circuit allows us to visit many “capitals” in a single day: Luque “Capital of the filigree”, Areguá “Capital of the strawberry”, Caacupé “Spiritual Capital of Paraguay”, Atyrá “Ecological Capital of Paraguay” and San Bernardino “Capital of the summer”.
In 1881, San Bernardino was founded by German and Swiss immigrants at the invitation of the Paraguayan Government. Here is the so traditional Hotel del Lago where so many personalities of the world stayed, such as the Argentine President Julio A. Roca, the President of the USA. Franklin D. Roosevelt, French President Charles de Gaulle, and Elizabeth Nietzsche, the sister of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

Detailed itinerary

1

08.00 am Pick up at a hotel or private address in Villa Morra (or in Las Carmelitas).
The first visit this day is the city of Luque, near Asunción, known for its silver and gold production. The most characteristic stamp is filigree, a goldsmith technique that consists of making fine metal threads of your choice, generally silver and gold, which make up delicate pieces of jewelry that resemble lace. Another reason for which this city is also known is music, an handicraft of making harps and guitars. We continue the tour towards Areguá, another town of Franciscan foundation, a picturesque city characterized by the colonial-style houses that are still mostly preserved and known as the “Capital of Strawberry” and its annual festival coincides with the harvest months. Another particularity of the city is the quantity of ceramic crafts made from clay art that can be found there.

2

The next city is Caacupé, in Guaraní “Ka`a Kupé” which means behind the hill. Here is the Minor Basilica, named as such by Pope Francis in 2015. Continuing with our adventure of the day we arrive to Atyrá, founded by Governor Domingo Martinez de Irala in the year 1538. And to everyone’s pride it is known as the Ecological Capital of Paraguay. We will visit the Multifunctional Redemptorist Center “Marianela”, built by the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer with the help of Italian faithful, especially from Verona.

3

And to close a wonderful day we reach the city of San Bernardino. Founded in 1881, after the War of the Triple Alliance, by German and Swiss immigrants who arrived at the invitation of the Paraguayan Government. Then we retake our way back to Asunción.
