It was renamed Romney Manor in the mid-17th century by the Earl of Romney, who declared his enslaved Africans free men in 1834, making it the first estate in St. Kitts to do so. The property has been growing and distilling sugar cane since its inception, but the sugar industry was closed by the government of St. Kitts on July 31, 2005, ending over 350 years of production.
Today, Romney Manor is home to Caribelle Batik, renowned for its fine batik products made using ancient Indonesian methods. Visitors can explore the beautiful gardens, watch batik demonstrations, and purchase unique batik items.
