Zaanse Schans is located about 30 minutes from Amsterdam. The best way to explain Zaanse Schans is that it is an open-air museum that showcases the rich heritage of the Zaans region. You get to see the windmills of The Netherlands and importantly the place has a rural setting with beautiful photo opportunities.
Volendam has a very special place in the history of the Netherlands. A former fishing village, Volendam was once a lively town and is now visited for its harbour and beautiful Dutch houses. Importantly, you will also learn about the famous Dijks of The Netherlands and its impact on the Dutch landscape. Volendam is a great example. You can also hop on a boat to reach Marken from here. Volendam is famous for its seafood and you can try traditional Dutch snacks with a perfect view of what used to be the North Sea.
Often preferred over Volendam, Edam is equally charming. The quaint little village is famous for Traditional Dutch houses dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, canals, and bridges. Edam cheese is world-famous and if you are visiting in summer, the cheese market is an added bonus. You also have the option to choose any of the other towns/villages in the region. For example, Monnickendam.
A small island with a population of just over 1800 residents, Marken can be visited on a ferry from Volendam or by car. The village has a couple of small but beautiful churches, a lighthouse, and several wooden houses. We will drive back to Amsterdam (30 minutes) after the visit.
