Meet your guide at your Panama City hotel, and make your way to the Miraflores Locks on a route that takes in Ancon Hill, parts of Panama’s Old Town and Albrook Mall, the largest shopping center in the city. The Miraflores Locks are the tallest on the entire canal, and it’s thrilling to watch ships make the slow step-up or step-down as they travel between sea level on the Pacific Ocean and Gatun Lake, whose surface is 85 feet (26 meters) above sea level. This is also the perfect place to see parts of the canal expansion that was completed in June, 2016. The recent project adding a new lane of boat traffic that doubles the Panama Canal’s capacity to accommodate ‘New Panamax’ ships that carry staggering cargoes between the two oceans.
