The town of Bayamon was founded on May 22, 1772 by Juan Ramirez Arellano. According to one version, the name comes from the name of the local Indian chief, Bahamon. According to another from the name in the Taino Indian language, Bayamongo, one of the rivers in the vicinity of the city.

Aguas Buenas was started by a small group of residents that built their homes by the local river systems. By 1832 they were declared a municipality. One resident gave up part of his estate to build a town square, church, a priest house, and the city hall. The town's economy relies mostly on coffee plantations.
