Stop 1

in front of the entrance to the Café the Schreier Tower, Prins Hendrikkade 94-95, 1012 AE Amsterdam, Netherland. Please do not enter the building, it is only a meeting point and the staff is not informed about the tour.

Your walking tour will begin in the historic Schreierstoren district, where van Gogh often hung out while studying for university exams, visiting his Uncle Sam.

You will learn more about Vincent’s interests in religion and theology as you pass the Oude Church, which was one of the 7 churches that he visited everyday. It’s the same church where Rembrandt married Saskia and had most of his children baptized.

Another point of interest will be the Trippenhuis, a museum that was often visited by Vincent.

You will also pass the Zuiderkerk, a 17th century church that played an important part in Rembrandt’s life, as well as his historic house, which now serves as a museum.

As you explore the former Jewish Quarter, you will learn more about why Rembrandt’s Jewish-themed paintings were important to the local Jewish community and why van Gogh was so impressed by them.
