Detailed itinerary

1

From the Rio Marina Mineralogical Museum it is possible to visit the Rio Marina open-air Mining Park, the oldest mine on the Island of Elba.

There are excursions on foot along the mining trails or on a characteristic train. Along the way the guides illustrate the different mineralogical species and the various extraction techniques used inside the mine.

The mine has a great scientific and historical value and, crossing the suggestive construction sites characterized by "lunar" landscapes, magical colors and the remains of old processing plants, it allows you to discover an area of enormous landscape and cultural importance.

The minerals mostly found in the mine are hematite and oirite, but other minerals such as quartz, elbaite, goethite and white and green marbles have also been recovered.

TOWER OF THE APPIANI
The port and the town of Rio Marina are dominated by the ancient Torre degli Appiani, built in 1534 at the behest of Giacomo V Appiano in order to improve the defensive structure and be able to have direct control over the sea and thwart numerous attacks by of pirates.

In those years, a famous correspondence was made for the coastal towers of Elba between Cosimo I de 'Medici and the Lords of Piombino (Appiani family), where the prince of Florence, worried about the incursions of Turkish pirates, ordered the Appiani to build coastal defense works in order to increase the defense of their territory.

It is assumed that the tower was erected following the famous destruction of Grassera in 1553 by the Turks.

In 1882, the tower was restored, building a small square tower on the upper side that houses a clock on three sides and for this reason it is often called the Clock Tower.

Stop 3

Via Calabaroccia, del Porticciolo, a characteristic street that leads to the port area of Rio Marina, is the end of the Via Panoramica del Porticciolo. Also called the Path of Love, the path is immersed in the scents and colors of the Mediterranean scrub, where the landscape between sky and sea offers very romantic suggestions.

4
Stop 4

The small lake of the Conche is a lake of mining origin located on the island of Elba north of Rio Marina, in the heart of the mining park of the island of Elba.

The stretch of water was formed at one of the excavation shafts of the Rio Albano mines, where hematite, pyrite, siderite and limonite were extracted.

The lake is characterized by the particular color of the water, which is diffusely red with purple reflections near the banks, where there are high concentrations of elements containing iron.
