09:00 AM – Depart from your hotel in Chiang Mai and travel south toward Lamphun, the ancient capital of the Hariphunchai Kingdom. Founded in 660 A.D., Lamphun is considered one of the oldest existing cities in Thailand.
10:00 AM – Upon entering Lamphun, you’ll notice the remnants of the ancient fortified city walls and the surrounding moat, both dating back to the 16th century and still clearly visible today.
Make your first stop at Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, the most revered temple in the province. This Royal Temple, built in 897 by a Lamphun king, is renowned for its magnificent 51-meter golden pagoda, which enshrines an authentic Buddha relic brought from India. Within the same temple grounds, you’ll also find a sacred Buddha footprint, a beautifully crafted teakwood library housing ancient Pali scriptures, an old Lanna-style chedi, and one of the largest call-to-prayer gongs in Thailand.
11:00 AM – Visit Wat Jammathevee, named after Queen Jammathevee, the first ruler of Hariphunchai. Locally known as “Wat Ku Kut,” the temple is famous for its unique chedi, which lost its top after being struck by lightning—giving it the name that means “the chedi without a top.”
