Panauti is a Newari town around 32 km southeast of Kathmandu is one of the oldest towns in Nepal, with many temples dating back to the 15th Century or earlier on the confluence of the Rosi and Punyamati rivers. In Nepali society, such rivers are considered to be sacred. Panauti, once a major trading center with its own royal palace, today consists of a variety of Buddhist and Hindu religious monuments, and is considered to be one of the area's most important medieval sites.

The story surrounding this area goes that a little prince saw a weak and hungry tigress lying on the ground with small cubs on his hunting tour in the area. The prince saw that the tigress and her cubs were hungry but had nothing to offer immediately. Eventually he fed his own flesh and blood to this striving tiger family. That young prince was off course little Buddha. Commemorating that great story, there is a famous shrine and stone slab featuring the history on the top of hill with great panorama of Himalaya and downhill villages.
