24 August 79 AD started like any other day... a sudden disaster struck a lively city located near one of the major trading ports of the Roman Empire. As the largest volcano on the Italian peninsula erupted, the entire city was wiped out overnight buried under volcanic ash. The city's name was Pompeii.
By the end of 25 august, the landscape around Mount Vesuvius had been changed forever and Pompeii had been completely buried. Within a few years no one could remember where the city had once stood.
When its excavation began almost 1700 years later what came to light astonished the world. Under the volcanic ash, the city had been beautifully preserved. A time capsule that revealed centuries later what town life had been like at the time of the Roman Empire. Not only the city buildings were perfectly preserved, volcanic ash also sealed their bodies and their thoughts often scratched into the plaster walls before the sudden tragedy. Looking at the numerous and sometimes hidden details of Pompeii, you will know about its inhabitants, their lives and their wishes that never came true...
