About this experience

The magnificent Bromo is East Java's icon and one of Indonesia's most breathtaking sites. A lunarlike landscape of epic proportions. Not to be missed and actually easily visited from Bali. This private tour takes just 1 day.
Mount Bromo is one of the three volcanoes that emerged from a vast crater, stretching 10 km across. The crater is partly covered by a black ashen volcanic Sea of Sand and partly a savanna; green during the raining season and golden during the dry season.
Overlooking the landscape from Mount Pananjakan while the sun rises is an incredible moment. Weather conditions and season dye the colours in the sky.
After the sun has risen you will cross the Sea of Sand and you will have time to spend near Mount Bromo and if possible even to hike to the top of the active volcano Bromo.
On route back to Surabaya the enchanting Madakaripura waterfalls are another refreshing moment.

Detailed itinerary

1

You will receive your flight tickets for the latest Garuda flight from Denpasar to Surabaya, which departs at 20:05. You land at 20:20 in Surabaya.

You will be picked up at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, where the driver is waiting for you with a paging board with your name on it.
You will be heading to a cafe in Surabaya city to have a rest and a good drink. At around 23:30 you will be heading to the Bromo area. It takes about 3 hours to reach Cemara Lawang village.

Once in Cemara Lawang you will change to a 4wd Jeep - Toyota Land Cruiser - and continue to Mount Penanjakan. Mount Pananjakan is one of the highest viewpoints in the area, with the famous view over the moonlike Bromo landscape.

2

Once the sun has risen, you will drive to the Sea of Sand within the Tengger caldera. It only takes 30 minutes over a winding road with great views.
Ask your driver to stop if you would like to take some pictures on your way down.

In the Sea of Sand, you could have a stop to explore and stretch your legs.

3

The Luhur Poten temple in the Sea of Sand in the Bromo-Tengger caldera is a special spot. Although most often it is closed, you can take a peek inside on the occasion that it is open. Otherwise, walk around, or walk by.

4

Although it isn't necessarily Mount Bromo that makes your jaws drop, but actually the entire landscape, it is an amazing moment to stand on top of a truly active volcano.
As volcanoes are unpredictable, it might be possible when you visit that there is a 1km safety zone applied. In that case, you can't hike to the top.

5

Once back at your Jeep, you will be heading back to Cemara Lawang village, also known under the name Ngadisari.
Breakfast will be served in Cafe Lava Hotel.

6

After breakfast, you will return to Surabaya. On route, you can visit the magnificent Madakaripura waterfall. If you are too tired or when time is short, you directly drive to the airport in Surabaya.

The enchanting Madakaripura waterfall is of importance to the Tengger-people.
After a short ride by taxi-motorbike, a fairly easy 30 min walk will be leading you to the waterfall. If you don't like to get wet during the hike, best is to bring a poncho.
