Detailed itinerary

1

Enjoy being on the heights of the old fortifications to admire this beautiful view of the Grund district located in the lower town of Luxembourg.

2
Stop 2 Pass by

You are now taking the most beautiful balcony in Europe! Just that! The Luxembourgish writer Batty Weber said so.

3

The 3D Impression statue you see here is the work of the Luxembourg artist Serge Ecker. The creation of Luxembourg is strongly linked to the legend of Melusine who was the companion of Count Sigefroi.

4

This small bridge of the old fortification spanning the Alzette allows you to reach the Grund district.

5

Here you are in the heart of the Grund district, in front of Neumünster Abbey. In 1547, the Benedictine monks transformed the former Saint John’s Hospital into a new abbey, as theirs had just been destroyed.

6

The monumental gate you see on your left is the Jacob Tower, also called Dinselpuert.

7

We are now surrounded on three sides by the Alzette. This is the Rham plateau, now accessible to the public after 5 years of restoration work.

8

Now take the free Grund lift that will allow you to effortlessly climb onto the Holy Spirit plateau.

9

You arrive at the judicial city of Luxembourg. In 1234, you would have arrived at the heart of the Holy Spirit Convent, in the place of the same name.

10

A word about the statue you see in the center of the square. She represents Grand Duchess Charlotte.

11

This is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg! It was built in the early 17th century, when the city belonged to the Spanish Netherlands, to serve as a church for the Jesuit College.

12

We now arrive at Constitution Square, located on the former Beck stronghold. From here you have a superb view of the Petrussian valley and the Adolphe bridge.

13

The beautiful 16th century Renaissance building, which you see there, is the Grand Ducal Palace. We're right in the heart of the old town.

14

Here you are in the Luxembourgers’ favourite square, nicknamed the “Salon de la Ville”. The Place d’Armaments, lined with cafés and restaurants, is certainly the most pleasant in Luxembourg.

15

You now pass the neo-Romanesque church of Saint-Alphonse. Founded in 1856, the history of its construction is strongly linked to the city’s controls by the Prussians who did not let the architects follow the original plans.

16

We now take the new large glass elevator from the Pfaffenthal. What a beautiful way to encompass the whole landscape to travel in a glass elevator!

17

This is where it all started. In the year of our Lord 963, the Count of Sigefroi, a descendant of Charlemagne, acquired this rocky promontory from the Abbey of Saint-Maximin-de-Trève and established his castle there.

18

Here you are at the entrance of the famous bock casemates. The most famous Attraction of Luxembourg City, they attract more than 100,000 visitors per year!
