Petra Fortress is a historic fortress-town located in Adjara, situated on the Black Sea coast at an elevation of 440 meters, just 9 kilometers from Kobuleti. Positioned on a rocky hillside overlooking the sea, Petra Fortress derives its name from the Greek word 'Petra,' meaning rock. The fortress was renowned for its strategic location amidst rugged terrain, making it virtually impregnable. Today, its ruins stand as a testament to its storied past. The archaeological complex comprises the Citadel, located outside the town and settlement. Within the Citadel, visitors can explore the remnants of a palace, ancient baths, farmhouses, soldiers' residences, and the basilica dating back to the VI-VII century, which once served as the Episcopal Cathedral of Peter. Despite the passage of time, Petra Fortress continues to intrigue visitors with its rich history and commanding presence.
