Cristo Rei is one of Lisbon’s most iconic monuments. The statue of Christ stands high above the southern banks of the Tejo Estuary, and depicts Christ with arms raised, blessing the city. Cristo Rei dates from the 1950s and its construction was in reverence for Portugal avoiding the horrors of WW2.

Since its consecration in 1959 Cristo Rei has been an important Portuguese pilgrim destination and today is a major religious centre for the diocese of Setubal. Lisbon’s Cristo Rei has many similarities to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio, and the Brazilian statue was the original inspiration.

Sesimbra is one of the finest resort towns of Portugal, and is adored by the Portuguese, being famed for its freshly cooked seafood and pristine coastline. Since the recent explosion of tourism, Sesimbra has been transformed into a bustling but welcoming resort town, which retains its character and heritage.

Aside from the beautiful beaches and delicious food, there is a lot to do within the Sesimbra region. There are hiking/biking trails through the Serra da Arrabida, surfing on the Costa da Caparica, kayak or boat tours along the dramatic coastline and some of the best diving in Portugal. As for day trips, fascinating destinations include, the cliffs of Cabo Espichel, the busy port of Setubal or the paradise beaches of the Tróia Peninsula.

With coves of golden sand and bright blue water hidden among pine-covered hills and vineyards, Arrábida Natural Park (Parque Natural da Arrábida) in Portugal is a hidden gem for nature lovers. The beaches are the main draw, but the park also attracts hikers and photographers, who come to explore the landscape and enjoy the panoramic views.

The thriving port town of Setúbal (shtoo-bahl) makes a terrific base for exploring the region’s natural assets. Top of the must-do list is a cruise to the marshy wetlands of the Sado estuary, the splashy playground of bottlenose dolphins, flocks of white storks (spring and summer), and wintering flamingos that make the water fizz like pink champagne. Explore the dramatic, pine-brushed coastline of Parque Natural da Arrábida and admire the nearby sandy beaches.
