**Note: Closed Dec 30 – Jan 1. During the closure, the itinerary will include Biei’s Seven Star Tree, Shikisai-no-Oka, Blue Pond, Shirahige Falls, Herb Garden (with hot drink), and Ningle Terrace.
Located in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, the Asahiyama Zoo is Japan's northernmost zoo and its most visited. While many assume that animals are less active or hidden during winter, a visit to this zoo on a snowy day reveals unique delights. Watch adorable penguins march through the snow, raccoons making funny faces as they climb above you, seals swimming playfully through glass cylinders, and monkeys huddling together for warmth. The zoo’s standout feature is its clever design, which maximizes animal freedom while allowing visitors to observe them up close. (The penguin walk, held from December to March, is scheduled at 11:00 AM during this time.)

This solitary oak tree became iconic after appearing on cigarette packaging in the 1970s. Standing tall in Biei’s patchwork fields, it’s a symbol of Hokkaido’s rural beauty. Please respect local farmland and stay on paved paths when taking photos.
