Under a majestic entrance tower (gopura) on your right, you are about to enter " the fortress of cells" or " the citadel of chambers" as it's also called.
Banteay Kdie was finished in early 13th century in the bayon architectural style - remember those giant buddha faces? A buddhist monastic complex was place on the site of a 10th-century temple.
We have already visited one temple that looked like it from a Tomb Raider movie. Well. now we are standing next to Ta Prohm temple where the actual movie with Lara Croft was shot. As a result, it quickly gained popularity and may now be overcrowded- I don't remember seeing so many tourists in game or in the movie!
welcome to another Mount Meru! Ta Keo temple is somehow difference. it's built completely from sandstone, which makes it the oldest sandstone Khmer building. It has a different massive look, due to the absence of external decorations. Was it some kind of Hindu artistic concept preferring simplicity?
At the same crossroad where we turned to the Thommanon, turn the opposite direction. We can see Chau Say Tavoda from there. It's less than 100 metres away. Chau Say Tavoda look like a twin temple to Thommanon. Scholars can't agree if Thommanon and Chau Sa Tavoda Are actually twin temples constructed during the reign of King Suryavarman I, or if the work on Thommanon started a few decades before Chau Say Tevoda was built.
Resting just by the way towards the ta Keo and Ta Prohm thommanon temple is one of the best-preserved classical Angkor style sights in the whole area. This elegant temple was build during the reign of Suryavarman II in rge first half of the 12th century.
Compared with Angkor Wat itself, the Thommanon temple was build at approximately the same time construction on Angkor Wat started. The final work on this temple, however, ended at the end of the 12th century. Archaeologists and art historians this this because of the style used for the carving of women.
This terrace is on the north side of the Terrace of the elephant - aligned with it but standing separate. It's the highest part of the terraces that surround the royal square of Angkor Thom. Constructed in the late 12th century during the reign of Jayavarman VI, this terrace was named after the statue that stands on it. When it was discovered, the moss and discolouration gave the statue a look of a person with leprosy. Coincidentally, the king who moved the capital of the Khmer empire near the Angkor Wat,
To see a specific part of the history of Angkor, we have reached the Buddhist shrine Tep Pranam. Unlike the vast majority of Buddhist temples date back to the 9th century, Tep Pranam was NOT originally place of any Hinduistic cult. Originally, a small wooden Buddhist shrine from 9th century, it was expanded over time with Naga balustrades, Lion sculptures and a laterite cruciform terrace.
We are about to enter the central temple of Angkor Thom-bayon.
We can climb the stairs at the entrance gate and walk aong the walls that from the first floor of the gallery. Speaking of which, the walls themselves are interesting for wall carvings. There is a fancy expression for this kind of carving which is called bas-reliefs, meaning low-reliefs as opposed to high reliefs. Enough of the linguistics and back to the carvings. They are full of stories. We can see the Khmer army on the march, a naval battle, as well as a market scene.
