About this experience

The White Mountains have taken their name from the perpetual white or off-white color of their peaks as the off white of limestone during the summer and fall interchanges with the snow that covers the peaks until late in spring.

The Samariá Gorge is a National Park of Greece since 1962 on the island of Crete – a major tourist attraction of the island – and a World's Biosphere Reserve.

The Botanical Garden is not just a simple attraction. It is a dance of the senses, a wandering of the soul into emotions forgotten. In recent years, the irrigation works in the region have reduced the size of the lake, which has become a swamp in many places.

It is situated in an outstanding area of the longest gorge in Europe, named Samaria and crossing paths with the European E4 trails. The breath taking wilderness of the White Mountains makes for superb walking terrain for numerous day hikes and extended mountaineering. You will find that this close encounter with such wild country, exotic fauna and wild life is a powerful way to put your busy life back in perspective.

Stop 3

White Mountains’ National Park is the only national park in Crete. It centres around the Samaria gorge, at an altitude of 1,200m and continues down to Agia Roumeli, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Along with the surrounding slopes and a number of smaller gorges branching off from it, Samaria Gorge forms the whole of the area designated as a national park, a status that offers protection to over 450 species of plant and animal, 70 of which are endemic to Crete. In the prefecture of Chania , the Samaria gorge is the longest in Europe (total length 16km), and one of the most impressive gorges in Greece.
