About this experience

Easy Going Tour, 1 hour drive then 300 feet walk from the parking lot and see the Ancient city of Altun Ha, plazas where 2000 years ago was the center of Maya civilization ceremonial activity. viewing the temple pyramids which during excavations yielded royal burial tombs laden with artifacts such as jade necklaces, pendants, face masks, stingray spines, monkey skulls, jaguar skin loincloth, manatee bones with writing, ceramic vessels once used for bloodletting rituals and incense burning. optional, go up the stairs to view the sacrificial altar where the 1968 excavations found animal bones, eccentric flint and jade objects in a burnt fashion. from atop the Sun Temple see the whole kingdom of Altun ha and reminisce the days of the Classic Maya that once ruled this land. then it's a short drive to the "baboon sanctuary" where we walk 5 minutes the Rainforest jungle trail and encounter a family of howler monkeys. The Sanctuary is realized thru the community preserving the Monkey Habitat.
