After breakfast, our driver and guide will pick up you from Your hotel at 8:30am and transfer to Kaiping Ancient Town. The Kaiping Diaolou and Villages, located in Kaiping City, Guangdong Province, were approved as a national cultural heritage site in 2001, and were listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2007. The Diaolou are fortified multi-storied tower-like structures that exquisitely integrate the Western architectural style with the Chinese architectural style.
After 2hrs driving to Kaiping. Then visit The Kaiping in the village of Zili, home to some of the most striking watchtowers, including some built by returning Chinese migrants who incorporated Western-inspired features in their design. Inspect the different styles of the towers close up, and head inside to absorb the interiors and bird’s-eye views from the rooftops.
After the Zili village, we will transfer to Liyuan Garden and Explore Kaiping’s elegant Liyuan Garden, also known as Li Garden: a stately blend of Chinese and Western architectural and landscaping influences. Meander around the exquisite gardens, seeing highlights like the birdcage-shaped pavilion, watchtowers, bridges and canals. After that, you will have a lunch at Kaiping center area.
And then Transfer to Chikan which is a historical town in the County of Kaiping. It is also a convenient hub for visiting the villages of diaolou in the area. From Kaiping City, we took one of the many local buses to reach Chikan in about half an hour.Out of the bus window, the well preserved colonnaded buildings or qilou took us by surprise. The vintage atmosphere of the streets and lanes in Chikan made us imagine that we were going back in time, to the early 20th century.Streets after streets of qilou buildings, two to three storey high, lined along the main thoroughfare.Rusty metal doors, broken window panes, darken plaster walls, most of the qilou buildings looked well past their prime. From the occasional stained glass windows and ornate plaster motifs, Chikan must have seen its splendid moments in the first half of the 20th century. Despite some were fenced off, on the ground floor of qilou we could still find all sort of local shops serving the remaining population of this historical town.
