From this terrace, you will have a gorgeous view of Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, and the nearby river. Notable sights at this stop are the Monastery of Saint Vincent and the dome of the National Pantheon. And if you’re an early bird, this is known as the best place to watch the sunrise in Lisbon, which has earned it its nickname as the ‘Door to the Sun’.
Every Saturday and Tuesday morning, a flea market takes place in the shadow of the monument, which is sure to be worth a visit.
Nowadays, this square is mainly used as a hub for public transportation and other traffic, but that doesn’t erase the history behind this place. Once the home to the Royal Hospital and now to various hotels and cafes, you’ll learn the story of a fire, the plague, an earthquake which brought us to the Praça da Figueira of today.
If the many climbs and descends in the streets of Lisbon are a little too much for you, you can skip 45 meters ahead from one neighborhood to the other. The construction of the lift finished in 1902 and it has since been a popular mode of transportation, even later becoming a part of the city’s public transportation system. The lift has been classified as a National Monument since 2002 and is considered as one of the highlights of Lisbon.
From this point, there’s two beautiful views you’ll have to divide your attention between. There’s the 25th of April Bridge and the large Christ the King statue on the opposite side of the river. Both monuments are roughly from the same time, with the Christ statue being unveiled in 1959 and the bridge opening in 1966. But worry not, you can take all the time you want admiring both scenes, before continuing the tour.
