Did you know that the inhabitants of Haarlem are also called "mosquitoes"? There are many theories about the origin of this nickname which will be shared with you in detail during the audio tour.
In the following points, you'll see just a few examples of the many attractions we will pass by.
The Grote or Sint Bavokerk or Big or Saint Bavo Church is a late medieval church, with a gorgeous Brabantine Gothic architectural style. During the Dutch Reformation, it was one of the churches that was stormed, destroyed and looted, and a priest was killed. Because of this tragic event, much of the interior was damaged, though many local painters have worked on restoring the art.
It’s not just the outside of Teylers Museum that is a real eye-catcher. The beautiful rooms are some of the best-preserved from the 18th century. The museum is partly Pieter Teyler’s home, partly a location that hosts exhibitions and activities. The building brings together objects of art and science under one roof, which was Pieter Teyler’s idea, revolutionary for his time. There is plenty to discover in this collection, to each their own.
Once a Free Reformed Church, the Jopen church is no longer used for praying anymore. Since 2010, the building is owned by Jopen BV, a local Haarlem brewery. They kept the interior, but changed the use of the location. Listen to the story of the beautiful and unique brewery, maybe even while enjoying a delicious Jopen beer. Cheers!
For the history of Haarlem, the Spaarne has always been vital. The river has existed for over 4000 years and has been used to connect Haarlem to the rest of the world, before the advent of the railways. The river runs directly through the city and in the summer, it’s widely used for water activities and there are special canal tours to experience the city from a different perspective.
