The cathedral was originally built as a Greek Orthodox church which lasted from 360 AD until the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire in 1453. It served as a mosque until 1935, when it became a museum. In 2020, the site once again became a mosque.

For visiting line in front of the entrance gate, waiting time around 45 minutes. There is not priority pass for official guides.

This subterranean cistern was called Basilica because it was located under a large public square, the Stoa Basilica, on the First Hill of Constantinople. Approximately 138 metres (453 ft) by 65 metres (213 ft), about 9,800 square metres (105,000 sq ft) in area, capable of holding 80,000 cubic metres (2,800,000 cu ft) of water, 336 marble columns, each 9 metres (30 ft) high. During the tour, you will visit marble blocks carved with the face of Medusa and teardrop column
