Dia is an uninhabited, Natura 2000 protected, island. It is located about 6 nautical miles north of Heraklion with crystalline waters, wild scenery and spectacular, wind protected coves. The legend says that it was a monster created by Zeus to destroy the Cretans. Eventually Zeus changed his mind and turned it into a stone. During the Minoan era the island was inhabited. Near Agios Georgios bay a significant harbour settlement was established. The harbour appeared to have sunk due to the eruption of Santorini volcano (1450 BC). You may still see the ruins while snorkeling around the place. Nowadays, the island hosts many wildlife species such as rabbits, kri-kri goats and hawks.
You may continue to take part in the sailing procedure or simply relax and marvel some more magnificent views of Heraklion while sailing back. If you have booked a Sunset cruise you may watch the stellar sunset and the twilight magic as the sun, led by God Helios riding his golden chariot, dives into the majestic Aegean Sea. Capture the magic moments forever by taking amazing photos or videos if you feel like it. Release your mind and let your romantic summer dreams become real.
The castle was first fortified by the Arabs in the 9th or 10th centuries. In 1303, it was destroyed in an earthquake but was rebuilt. In 1523, during the Venetian occupation, the Byzantine castle was demolished, and the Castello a Mare was built instead. In 1630, the fortress was armed with 43 cannons. After a 21-year long Siege of Candia, the Ottomans eventually took the fort in 1669.
While docking in the Old Venetian harbour you will have the chance to enjoy unique views of Heraklion. Now it’s time to say goodbye. We look forward to host you or your friends onboard the soonest and share an everlasting sailing experience !!
