Detailed itinerary

1

If you want to enjoy the beauty of Piazza Duomo to the fullest, I suggest you stand in the center, beside the fountain topped with the figure of Neptune. This statue is actually a bronze copy of the original eighteenth-century sculpture by the artist Stefano Salterio, which is now in the courtyard of Palazzo Thun. Beneath the statue of Neptune, sea gods, mermaids, dolphins and seahorses embellish the Baroque monument, designed by Antonio Giongo in the 18th century.

2

The Romanesque Trento Cathedral, dedicated to San Vigilio, was built on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to the saint, a former bishop and patron saint of the city. The church was built outside the city walls, because it was also used as a burial place; it is the resting place of Saint Vigilius, as well as of three martyrs, Saint Sisinnius, Saint Marturius and Saint Alexander.

3

Palazzo delle Albere takes its name from the fact that a long avenue lined with trees (alberi in Italian) used to lead from the city center to this noble dwelling, built for the Madruzzo family. At the start of this avenue there was an arch called “arco dei tre portoni”. The main entrance to the edifice was originally at the end of the avenue, where you can now see a park, smaller than it was once because part of it has been occupied by the Trento monumental cemetery.

4

The magnificent Buonconsiglio Castle is the most important and best-known monument complex in the Trentino area. At first sight, you’ll be struck by the sheer size of the complex, made up of numerous buildings, dating to various periods, surrounded by massive walls. As a result of construction being carried out over centuries, there is the extraordinary variety of architectural styles. A visit to the fortress offers a thrilling journey amid powerful medieval towers, refined Venetian loggias, Renaissance frescoes and distinctly theatrical Baroque decorations.
