You will begin your journey in San Sebastian and drive one of the most scenic roads along Basque Coast, where the harsh landscape of Mount Jaizkibel cuts into the ocean. On the way, your guide will give you an introduction on the history of the area, and what to expect throughout the experience.
We will first stop in the fishing port of Hondarribia and dive into the history of local sailors, pirates and explorers to understand the intimate relation between the Basques and the ocean. You'll also immerse yourself in some of the oldest fishing traditions and find out what are our favorite seafood delicacies.
From the port we will head to the historic part of this fortified town that set the stage for some of Basque Country’s most glorious battles. Its narrow streets, flowers draped from the balconies and medieval charm creates an extraordinary atmosphere and cultural context. You will find out who were ‘hacheros’ - men with peculiar sheep wool hats and discover a hidden collection of tapestries by Rubens in the castle of Emperor Charles V.
It’s time for some pintxos! Did you know that the most prestigious pintxo competition in the region - Euskal Herria Pintxo Contest was founded in Hondarribia? That’s right! Hondarribia is one of the best places to experience our region’s ambitious cuisine. We will visit two excellent bars in the old part and continue to the fishermen’s village known as the Marina to savour pintxos in another three establishments.
We will switch from traditional, family-run to modern, award-winning restaurants enjoying textures and flavours of the highest quality, seasonal ingredients turned into artsy creations by talented chefs! The guide will also give you practical tips on how to enjoy pintxos the way locals do. In each place we will pair our dishes with delicious, regional drinks whether to be wine, beer or apple cider.
Now something for those with a sweet tooth! Let us surprise you with a beloved by locals dessert that is a must after every pintxo stroll.
