Psiloritis Mountain is the highest mountain on the island of Crete (2,456m).
The Greek Mythology is set at the mountain range of Psiloritis where Idaion Antron is located. According to greek mythology, there is the cave where Deus, the King of the Gods, was raised. The ruins at Ancient Zominthos and the surrounding areas mark the occupation of Psiloritis mountain, since the Minoan period. Diachronic exploitation of the landscape is visible, with many scattered villages near the fringes of the mountain and intense pastoral practices held by the locals at the hillsides.
The highest peak of Timios Stavros(2.456m), offers a panoramic view all over Crete, given the fact that you are at the highest level of the island. The small church, in the area of Timios Stavros, made of stone and the style of cretan “mitato”, is unique and typical of the cretan landscape.
Because of its history, it’s geological and its environmental value, Psiloritis is part of Geoparks of UNESCO, which places the mountain amongst the Geoparks of high importance at global level.
