After I pick you up from your hotel in Brasov, we'll drive for about an hour and a half to Viscri while I introduce you to the beginnings of Romanian history. The first visit is to Viscri, a charming village located remotely in a countryside area of Transylvania. It was originally established by the Székelys, Transylvania’s earliest settlers, and later saw an influx of Saxon colonists in the 12th and 13th centuries. The village is home to the iconic Viscri Fortified Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the best-known in Romania.
Half an hour's drive from Viscri, our next stop is Sighișoara Fortress. A UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the heart of Transylvania, with its colorful buildings, cobbled streets, and well-preserved 14th-century architecture, this historic gem transports you back in time. Home to the iconic Clock Tower, Sighișoara is the place where Vlad the Impaler, spent his first years of life. Explore the medieval citadel, wander through the enchanting squares, and feel the echoes of centuries-old tales. The fortress exudes a timeless beauty that captivates every visitor, making it a must-see destination for history enthusiasts and those seeking a magical journey through the past.
On our way back from Sighisoara we will stop for Rupea Fortress. Even tho this is not a UNESCO sight like the other two that we just visited, is worth your while. This gem was constructed by the Transylvanian Saxons and documented as early as 1324, Rupea Fortress stands proudly on a 120-meter-high basalt cliff to the west of Rupea town. This medieval stronghold held significant strategic importance in the 14th century, serving as a vital nexus connecting Transylvania, Moldavia, and Wallachia. From Rupea Fortress we'll drive back for about an hour and we'll conclude this tour back at your hotel in Brasov.
