About this experience

Board a small boat to visit the medieval Almourol Castle located on a Tagus River islet.
Visit the amazing Convent of Christ, a world heritage site. It was the headquarter in Portugal of the Knights Templar. It presents amazing medieval architecture and renaissance art along with many stories and legends of the Templars.
Walk down to Tomar center to wander the streets, visit the beautiful manuelin Church and the old Synagogue.
When leaving Tomar, step on the old Aqueduct that provided water to the Convent and enjoy the monumental view.

Almourol Castle was taken to the moors in 1129 and given to the Templars. It became then an important piece of the defensive line of the Tejo river. It looks magnificent in the river island. The visit is done by a small boat ride from the north bank.

When Tomar was conquered to the moors it was given to the Templar Order in 1159. Visit the medieval castle and the Convent of Christ inside the castle walls. The Convent features “Charola”, a round chapel from the 12th century which is a medieval art masterpiece. It also features a famous Manuelin (king Manuel I) architecture window from a later period. The whole complex is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

Tomar old town is a medieval urban area with cross shaped streets looking up to the castle hill. The old 15th century synagogue is a great example of the jewish presence until the early 16th century expulsion order by king D.Manuel I. The Church of São João Baptista is a highlight of Tomar situated in Praça da República always with the imposing castle above. Taste the local pastries in the coffe shops.
