Detailed itinerary

1

Mojiko, located in Kitakyushu, Japan, is a charming port town known for its preserved retro architecture and scenic waterfront. Once a bustling international trading port, Mojiko now offers visitors a nostalgic glimpse into the early 20th century with attractions like the Mojiko Station, Kaikyo Plaza, and the Mojiko Retro District filled with cafes, museums, and shops.

A unique feature of Mojiko is the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, a 780-meter-long undersea passage that allows pedestrians to walk beneath the Kanmon Strait, connecting Kyushu and Honshu. The tunnel is free for pedestrians and takes about 15 minutes to traverse. Bicycles and motorbikes can also use the tunnel for a small fee, but must be pushed through.
Another popular experience is the Kanmon Ferry, which offers a brief, scenic 5-minute voyage between Mojiko and Shimonoseki. This ferry ride provides stunning views of the Kanmon Bridge and the surrounding sea, making it a delightful way to cross the strait.

2

At Kokura Castle, travelers will be captivated by the striking Tang-style architecture of the castle tower, admired for its simple yet bold design that sets it apart from other Japanese castles. Surrounding the castle, the Kokura Castle Garden offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can stroll among seasonal flowers, manicured landscapes, and traditional features that reflect the elegance of Japanese garden design. Literature lovers can also explore the Matsumoto Seicho Memorial Museum, which highlights the life and influential works of the celebrated Japanese novelist. For those wishing to enjoy the full experience, a combined pass covering Kokura Castle, the garden, and the memorial museum is available for 700 yen per person (self-funded). Please note that depending on capacity or weather conditions, some attractions may need to be skipped to ensure a smooth and comfortable visit.

3

At Miyajidake Shrine in Fukutsu City, travelers will step into a sacred site with a history dating back about 1,700 years. Known as the head shrine of all Miyajidake Shrines across Japan, it enshrines Empress Jingu as its main deity, attracting countless visitors seeking blessings for prosperity and good fortune. The shrine is also famous for its enormous sacred objects, including a giant shimenawa (straw rope), drum, and bell, each said to be the largest in Japan. Visitors can stroll the expansive grounds, admire the impressive architecture, and enjoy the breathtaking view along the “Path of Light,” a perfectly aligned approach from the shrine’s main hall that stretches straight to the Genkai Sea, especially stunning at sunset. This blend of spiritual atmosphere, cultural heritage, and scenic beauty makes Miyajidake Shrine a memorable highlight of the journey.
