Detailed itinerary

1

Travelers heading from the LAWSON Oriental Hotel Fukuoka to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine will first pass through the bustling cityscape of Fukuoka, characterized by modern buildings, busy streets, and city parks. The urban area, the scenery shifts to suburban neighborhoods with residential areas and local shops. Further along, the surroundings become more rural, featuring picturesque fields, forests, and rolling hills. As the journey continues towards Aso, travelers will begin to see mountainous terrain with volcanic landscapes and lush greenery typical of the Kumamoto Prefecture region. The visitors finally arrive at the shrine, where the tranquil and scenic environment, including the lantern-lined path leading to the shrine, awaits.

2

Mount Aso – Located in Kumamoto Prefecture, Mount Aso is one of the world’s largest active volcanoes and the largest in Japan. Its massive caldera spans about 25 km in diameter, offering breathtaking views of volcanic landscapes, lush grasslands, and dramatic peaks. The highlight is Nakadake Crater, where you can witness the steaming volcanic activity up close (subject to safety conditions). Surrounding areas such as Kusasenri Plain provide wide open fields perfect for scenic walks, photos, and appreciating the raw power and beauty of nature.

3

At Kamiishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, visitors can stroll along a picturesque path illuminated by nearly 100 lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere. The shrine features Kuroto Rock, which symbolizes overcoming obstacles, and the sacred Nagi tree, known for its blessings related to marriage and career success.

4

Amano Iwato Shrine is known for its tradition of piling stones on the Amano River to make wishes, resulting in numerous stone towers around the area. Dedicated to the god Amano Iwato, the shrine is revered for its healing powers and its ability to enhance fortune. Traditional blessing ceremonies also add to its spiritual significance.

5

Takachiho Gorge – A breathtaking natural wonder in Miyazaki Prefecture, Takachiho Gorge is famed for its sheer volcanic cliffs carved by the Gokase River. The turquoise waters wind dramatically between steep, columnar rock walls, creating one of Japan’s most picturesque landscapes. The highlight is Manai Falls, a 17-meter-high waterfall that cascades gracefully into the gorge. Visitors can stroll along the scenic riverside walking trail or rent a rowboat to admire the gorge from below, where the views of waterfalls, lush greenery, and towering cliffs are simply unforgettable. Steeped in mythology and natural beauty, Takachiho Gorge is truly the crown jewel of Kyushu.
