Detailed itinerary

1

See the small, rocky island just off the coast? That's Seal Rock. Thousands of harbor seals and sea lions gather here every day to bask in the sun, rest after catching fish, and, if the season's right, squabble over mates.

2

This is the La Jolla Cove Bridge Club, and it's a clue as to how La Jolla got to where it is today.

3
Stop 3 Pass by

We're walking through Ellen Browning Scripps Park, named for one of the most important figures behind La Jolla's rapid expansion.

4
Stop 4 Pass by

Welcome to beautiful, historic, and scenic La Jolla! Although technically part of San Diego, you'll soon find that this neighborhood has a character and history uniquely its own.

Note: The tour is over 3+ miles long, with more than 19 audio stories, and takes about 1-2 hours to complete.

Buy once, use for one year! Ideal for extended visits and return trips over the next 12 months.

5

Coming up on your right is a famous, and curious, La Jolla spot: Children's Pool Beach. Pullover and pause in front.

6

On your right is Cuvier Park, the most popular place in San Diego to tie the knot. In fact, it's such a beloved destination for soon-to-be-married couples that some call it The Wedding Bowl. Given its picturesque location by the water, I'm sure you can see why.

7

Ahead, keep right and slow down as you drive. Of course, La Jolla's history didn't begin when humans arrived here. Life on the Pacific coast has been thriving for millions of years.

8

In a few blocks, we're going to see a small building with a long history. It's the La Jolla Woman's Club, founded by - who else? - Ellen Scripps. When the club began in 1901, American women lacked any sort of equality, with no right to vote, and no right to custody of their children.

9

Do you see a peach-colored belltower ahead? That's St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. It dates to 1908 and, like much of La Jolla, owes its existence to Ellen Scripps.

10

The white Spanish-revival building with terracotta shingles and arched windows is a must for lovers of the arts. It's the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library.

11

The white cross on that hill marks a solemn and at times controversial location: the Mt. Soledad National Veteran’s Memorial.

12
Stop 12

Windansea is what’s known as a surf break. Rocky obstructions under the water here cause waves to break and also form those classic barrel-shaped curls that make for radical surfing.
