High above the village of Werfen, amid the magnificent mountain world of the Tennengebirge, we find the entrance to the world’s biggest explored labyrinth of ice caves, explore the panoramic view of Salzburg’s giant ice caves in Werfen on this truly unique journey

On our way back to Salzburg we will stop near the fascinating late gothic pilgrimage church of St. Nikolaus, to visit the beautiful Golling waterfalls, the falls plunge 75 metres down two giant steps into the valley below. The thunderous Golling falls are one of the provinces most attractive and romantic natural monuments.

An exciting journey deep into the Dürrnberg, where miners were hauling a treasure out into the daylight over 2500 years ago, one that took its rightful place right next to jewels and diamonds: known as "white gold".

For some 450 years, visitors from around the world have been entering the Hallein salt mine, deep inside the Dürrnberg. Which makes the Hallein salt mine the first in history to open its tunnels to the public. All were fascinated by the mysterious subterranean world. And to this very day, the mines which the Ancient Celts clawed meter-by-meter out of the Earth over 2500 years ago have lost none of their magical appeal.

Important notes

Preparations for your visit:

Heavy or sport shoes and warm clothing are recommended. Even in summer the temperature is usually below freezing. Lamps are handed out at the entrance to the cave, and during the tour additional magnesium lighting highlights the ice sculptures to great effect. The cave itself is a national monument and may only be entered by authorized guides.

Health and Fitness:

Visitors have to walk uphill for 20 minutes twice before getting to the entrance of the ice cave in the cave you will have to climb 134 meters, which is equivalent to climbing the stairs in a high block of flats. Each individual must decide for himself whether he is physically capable or not. The beauty and breathtaking dimensions of the cave provide plenty of reward for the effort! Although the speed of the guided tour is tailored to the group, we advise those with serious walking difficulties or heart circulation problems not to visit the caves.

Children:

Parents must decide themselves whether the relatively long walk and cold temperatures are suitable for young children. Experience has taught us that it is not suitable for many children up to the age of 4-5. If children accompany the group, they should be wearing warm clothing, as well as gloves and a hat.
