Here's my suggested sample itinerary(7 hours) for first time visitors in Guangzhou:
Pick up from hotel;
Baiyun Mountain(electric car go up and cable car come down);
Sun yat-sen Memorial Hall;
Six Banyan Temple;
Lunch at a traditional Cantonese restaurant to try dim sum;
Xiguan old house community&Lychee Bay Park;
Flower city square(Guangzhou Opera House,Guangzhou library,Canton Tower.etc);
Drive back to hotel.

Linger around the Xiguan Old House community and Lychee Bay Park where you could see the traditional Cantonese style architecture "Qilou Building" and Wooden Sliding Doors, interact with local people with Cantonese opera show and "shuttlecock" kicking by feet.
