About this experience

This is a private tour with a 7-seater van for a maximum 6 guests (price is for 6 persons).
If you are looking for a hiking tour away from the crowds, this would be the ideal tour for you.
Agia Irini gorge is located on the western Lefka Ori mountains. It is smaller than Samaria gorge, thus more easier to hike, around 4 hours total. I will drop you at the entrance and pick you up at the exit. It's good to have a sufficient supply of water. The surrounding nature is stunning as it is lush and green in the bottom with the indigenous flora and fauna of Crete. Its our favourite for a short hike close to Chania, during the hot summer months we usually hike the gorge with friends. We will have lunch at Sougia village and possibly swim there. Agia Irini gorge is the second best gorge to hike in Chania area after Samaria gorge. It is breathtaking, ideal for nature lovers and wildlife watchers

Detailed itinerary

1

Agia Irini Gorge is located in the south west of Crete, located 43 km from Chania Town. The gorge starts at the village of Agia Irini in Selinou and is 7 km long. The extended walk of 12 km ends at the village of Sougia, a blissful small coastal village on the southern side of Crete. The scenery is full of rocks and boulders and the steep sides of the mountains will guide us to walk along the rocky river bed. The plane trees, cyprus pines and maple trees contrasted with the pink flowers of the oleanders make a landscape beyond human imagination. There are several other endemic species in the gorge and surrounding area, as well as many other species of flowers, birds and also the rare Cretan wild goat (kri kri). There numerous of signs and there are rest stops along the way. Be sure to take plenty of water. There is a café at the start of the walk. Allow a good 3-4hours for the walk, which would allow for stops and delight in the scenery and photographing of nature.
The Additional Tour to Sougia
In case you want to visit the village of Sougia which is located after the Agia Irini Gorge on the coast, we could stay 2 hours longer at Sougia for a swim or eat in a restaurant. The village is beautiful and it has lots of great eateries with an outstanding scenery by the sea!

We will stop at Sougia village for a well deserved lunch after the hike.
