About this experience

Robben Island is World renowned Island notorious for the incarceration of South African political prisoners including Nelson Mandela. This was a common stopping point for passing ships in the 16th and 17th century. Housed a leper colony from 1846 to 1931 and also those judged insane were also sent there.

From mid 1960s to 1991 Robben Island served as South Africa's maximum-security prison which housed most political prisoners including Nelson Mandela. Robben Island was declared a World Heritage site in 1999.

The tour then takes you to Spice Route which is a very popular winery with multiple activities. You can taste wine, craft beer, ice cream, chocolate tasting, Gin tasting and amazing food.

We then visit award wining Babylonstoren winery which has several activities besides wine tasting. There is a 35ha fruit and vegetables Garden and a Garden Spa. Visit the Spice Garden an Italian Bakery, a Healing Garden and Tea Ceremony.

There also is a Greenhouse Restaurant and a Juicery.

Stop 1

Visit Prison no 7 which was home to Nelson Mandela during his 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment. Take a tour of several other prison buildings.

Visit the penguin sanctuary where you will encounter the flightless birds in their natural habitat. There is also a Lepers Graveyard which provides historical information as it was established as a Leper colony four centuries ago.

Take a tour of the Prison Museum which is the main reason people visit this place. The Quarry is also a place not to be missed as it provides information about the harsh conditions under which the ex-political prisoners were kept. Visit the house of Robert Sobukwe one of the leading struggle icons.

There is also a great photo opportunity provided to visitors as you take a break during the tour. During this time you can take a cup of coffee while exploring the beauty of the bay from Robben Island. There is totally outstanding views of Table Mountain, The V & A Waterfront, Signal Hill and the World Cup Stadium.

Enjoy the wine while taking in the views of the valley overlooking this amazing location. There is an option of you doing the tasting from the tasting room or on the loan.

Visit the chocolate tasting room where you are treated to a variety of chocolate flavors. Choose from artisanal and handcrafted chocolates with a single origin. You can choose to pair the chocolates with some confectioneries.

Ice cream tasting is also part of the great experience at the DV Cottage Cafe. Indulge in the artisanal ice cream as well as sorbets.

Optionally you can go for Gin Tasting a liquor distilled with botanicals, predominantly the Juniper berry. Choose from Craft Gin Tasting, Grappa Tasting and The Fynbos Gin Tasting.

Choose from three restaurants available on the farm where you can spoil yourself. Bertus Basson prepares traditional South African foods, La Grapperia serves pizza and Bistro which are served with fired pizzas.
Finally visit the Barley and Biltong Emporium for gourmet burgers.

Take a walk in this amazing 3.5 hectare garden - the most popular attraction on the farm. Choose from over 3km of paths through the garden which provides hours of walking pleasure or join the guided walking tour led by one of the gardeners.

Go wine tasting in the tasting room. Sit back relax and enjoy a stylish space with a glass of wine and maybe a platter to share. Experience world class spa, set within a forest of bamboo, flowing water channels, the spa offers a world class oasis of peace and relaxation.
Visit The Spice Garden in the doomed conservatory. Explore an array of aromatic spices associated with the spice trade such as ginger, turmeric and nutmeg cloves. Gaze at the Tropical Asian fish swim about in two glass aquariums.

On Mondays the bakery hosts the Buonissimo Italian evening which is a three-course menu. Visit The Healing Garden and Tea at Babylonstoren. Find herbs which are meant to heal the human anatomy.

There is also a Greenhouse Restaurant and much more.
