About this experience

Between the 10th century end and the mid-13th century, during the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors, Portugal emerged as an independent kingdom, much due to the support of the Knights Templar.

This tour takes you on a journey inspired by the mysteries of the history of the Knights of the Order of the Temple and their symbolism full of occult messages, to discover some of Moor heritage left behind and Portugal’s Templar treasures.

Besides that, Tugabuddies is a sightseeing tour agency that has been creating and delivering customized tours through the Center and West of Portugal (and a few other stunning places) since April 2016.

We focus on carefully preparing each experience to meet all customer’s expectations and tastes. Our team’s work is based on the passion we all share for our home country, Portugal, but also on knowledge, experience and a great will to serve with care and quality.

We won’t just be your tour guide; we will be Your Portuguese Best Friend!

Detailed itinerary

1

Older than Portugal itself, the medieval village of Ourém is a true precious jewel that will surely catch your eye with its deeply rich historical heritage and unrivalled beauty.

2

The place where the Castle of Ourém now stands was inhabited since prehistoric times. Its manor house, built by the 4th Count of Ourém, D. Afonso, in the 14th century, is a unique example in Portugal, a symbol of military and economic wealth.

3

In order to supply water to the Convent of Christ ,the Aqueduct of Pegões was one of the main public works built in the 17th century in Portugal. It is around 6-km long and constituted by 180 arches.

4

The Convent of Christ is one of the most beautiful Portuguese monuments, that illustrates seven centuries of Portugal's history and contains numerous reminders of decisive moments in the history of the western world.

It offers its visitors several points of interest that had the influence of several architectural styles throughout the centuries, such as the castle, the Gothic and Renaissance cloisters, the charola and the Manueline church.

5

Once part of the Convent complex, where the members of the Order of Christ used to farm and meditate, this forest is nowadays a park where you can relax for some minutes and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty.

6

Built between 1430 and 1460, the Synagogue of Tomar is one of the very few Coeval Jewish temples from the presence of this people in Portugal, in earlier times to the expulsion they were subjected to by King Manuel I.

7

A fun fact about this city is that its historic centre was designed as a cross, having a convent at each cardinal point.
At the centre of this cross, there is the square Praça da República, with the city hall on one side and the Church of St. John the Baptist on the other.

Stop 8

Almourol Castle is the most magical of Portugal's castles, set as it is on an island in the middle of the River Tagus. Once the border between Christian and Islamic Portugal, it's one of the most emblematic military monuments of the Reconquest.

9

This garden is one of the most wonderful places in the historic centre of Santarém. It has a real balcony to the Tagus river and the numerous fields that make up the beautiful landscape of this region.
