UNESCO has hailed Longmen Grottoes as the pinnacle of Chinese stone carving art, and it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in November 2000,The construction of Longmen Grottoes began around 493 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty when Emperor Xiaowen moved the capital to Luoyang. The construction continued for over 400 years until the Northern Song Dynasty.It stretches about 1,000 meters from north to south and contains over 2,300 holes and niches, 2,800 steles, 40 dagobas, 1,300 caves and nearly 110,000 statues
