About this experience

Kefalonia is a beautiful island in Ionian that is known for its wine culture. A wine tour in Kefalonia is an excellent way to explore the vineyards and wineries on the slopes of Mt Ainos and beyond. You will learn all about the famous “Robola” grape introduced by Venetians and how it is used to make unique Kefalonian wines. The tour will be led by expert wine guides who will provide you with all the knowledge and expertise you need, on a series of fine wines with the correct way of tasting them. Tour the cellars of each wine estate, and follow the production process from harvesting the grapes through to maturing the wine. Walk with your guide around one of the estate’s mountain vineyards, and sip on up to 12 – 15 different varieties of the island wine, including local Robola and Mavrodaphne. Nibbles such as olives, bread, and cheese are also included.

Detailed itinerary

1

Gentilini is a small, boutique, family-run winery that produces top-quality, exciting, and unique wines while promoting the unique flavors and aromas of the local Kefalonian varieties. It was the first boutique winery in Greece and now produces a full range of unique fine wines which are exported around the world. You will be treated to a full tour of the winery and vineyards, followed by a wine tasting accompanied by a plate of nibbles and the Retreat’s extra-virgin olive oil.

2

Visit a modern winery complex harmoniously combines the old – a traditional facility dating back to the 16th century – with modern wine producing facilities.
Divino is located on the site of the old family winery that has been restored as an exhibition/museum area with a wine bar, restored facilities for the production of straw wines, and the new, high-technology winery, equipped to produce quality wines with respect to the natural characteristics and special requirements of each grape variety. Today the annual production capacity is 100,000 bottles. The 12 wines and 3 exceptional vinegar varieties produced, cater to all preferences and will satisfy every palate.

3

At the heart of the Robola Wine-Growing Zone, dozens of winemakers from Omala and the surrounding areas created the Kefalonian Robola Wine Cooperative in 1982, in an attempt to protect and promote the Kefalonian vineyard’s potential. The newest Greek viticultural cooperative consisting of 300 members receives 80% of Robolas from the Designation of Origin zone.
Under its new name, “OREALIOS GAEA”, inspired by the rare terroir and the breathtaking natural landscape, the Cooperative is ushering a new era, with activities and oenological practices that respect local tradition while raising the bar of the winemaking art!
