This neo Renaissance Palace was built between the 1860s and 1870s by order of the Crown Prince Oscar of Sweden and his wife Sopia of Nassau.

The castle was refurbished in 1905 after Gustaf VI Adolf and Crown Princess Margaret received it as a gift. The most significant change was the addition of the rhododendron bushes, which are a signature of the gardens.

There are also contemporary art installations, plus a restaurant and a café.
