About this experience

Explore the mossy green forest of Shiratani-Unsuikyo on Japan's Yakushima Island on this 3- to 7-hour guided tour from Isso and Kurio. In a small group of no more than four, soak up the forest's natural beauty and understand why is said to depict the world of Hayao Miyazaki’s famous animation film "Princess Mononoke."

On the way back, usually we take the same route (about 6 hrs in total), or if you enjoy the forest longer, we can make a detour on a different route which is less crowded with tourists and more relaxing (7 hrs at most).

Detailed itinerary

1

For most Japanese tourists, this course is popular because its moss green forest depicts the world of Hayao Miyazaki’s famous animation film "Princess Mononoke".
Doesn’t matter whether you’ve seen the film or not, it is a nice trekking course to experience Yakushima’s forest, and there you can imagine why this island inspired the renowned animation creator who is fond of natural world.

The tour varies in 3 courses.

For an easy trekking, we walk about 3 hours in the forest, and then we take you to sightseeing for the rest of the tour day (check also Sightseeing).

If you choose a whole day trekking, we climb up the hill, and at last, get up on Taiko-Iwa Rock, from which you can see the magnificent view of the wide deep green valley and the highest peaks of Yakushima. However, how much view you can enjoy depends on the weather. Sometimes, you just stand on the rock amidst the cloud, seeing nothing but white mist.
