Detailed itinerary

1

From Brasov, we will head west to Fagaras, driving parallel to the Meridional Carpathians. Our first stop will be Fagaras where we will visit the only fortress built by Romanians from Transylvania during the Middle Ages. The city was a long time the politico-administrative centre of these lands.
The main attraction is the Fagaras Fortress which dominates all the buildings in the city, being situated in the town centre. It is surrounded by a lake, the only fortress of its kind in Romania and it’s still retained completely. The fortress was the residence of Michael the Brave, of his wife Mrs Stanca and after that the residence of Principles Gabriel Bethlen of Transylvania and George Rakoczi. In the middle of the 20th century, the fortress was used as a jail.

After the visit to the fortress, we hit the road to Sibiu where we will visit the medieval part of it. We will visit Sibiu on a walking tour, we’ll discover the facts and the legends behind the fortification of Sibiu, the historical churches or the romantic squares. The tour will be also a good opportunity to find out more about the historical, geographical, economical or cultural aspects of Sibiu, in particular, or Transylvania and Romania, in general.
After the Sibiu visit, we will go to the Ethnographic Museum where you’ll discover the Romanian villages. This is an open museum that gathered households from across the country in a relaxing place.
