On this self-guided walking tour, you’ll hear about Ålesund’s history from the Viking Age, through World War II and modern times, while enjoying several beautiful views.
Ålesund is a charming Art Nouveau town on Norway’s west coast. It was almost completely rebuilt after a great fire destroyed the town center in 1904.
The tour starts in front of Destinasjon Ålesund & Sunnmøre, the tourist office, and takes you along Kongens Gate Road. You’ll see striking views of the tiny Molja Lighthouse, Mount Aksla, and the Ålesund strait, which prove why the town was voted the most beautiful in Norway. As you stroll, you’ll see that this relatively small town has many surprises, with flower motif ornamentation weaving around the walls, and trolls, dragons, and gremlins popping up in surprising places. You’ll see plenty of stone houses with towers, spires, and peculiar gables. I’ll also show you Ålesund Church and the cruise pier before you reach the end of the tour in Ålesund City Park.
You’ll pass by the statue of Margit Johnsen, a Norwegian war heroine honoured for her bravery during World War II. Please note that any costs related to visiting the area are not covered in this tour.
You’ll glimpse the Molja Lighthouse, a historic beacon that has stood at the entrance to Ålesund’s harbour since 1858. Please note that any costs related to visiting the area are not covered in this tour.
You’ll pass by the statue of Avisgutten, a tribute to the city’s young newspaper boys and their role in Ålesund’s history. Please note that any costs related to visiting the area are not covered in this tour.
You’ll stroll along Skansengata, a historic street known for its charming wooden houses and scenic views over Ålesund. Please note that any costs related to visiting the area are not covered in this tour.
You’ll pass by Kremmergaarden, a central shopping centre that blends modern retail with Ålesund’s distinctive architectural style. Please note that any costs related to visiting the area are not covered in this tour.
You’ll pass by Ålesund Church, a striking stone structure rebuilt in 1909 after the town fire, known for its beautiful stained glass and historical significance. Please note that entry to the church is not included in this tour.
