Discover one of Europe’s most mischievous artists on a self-guided walking tour through Prague that goes far beyond medieval towers and baroque palaces.
On this art-focused walking tour, I’ll introduce you to the artist David Černý, and show you how he’s transformed the city into his personal gallery. His sculptures are provocative, funny, cheeky – and sometimes downright shocking.
You’ll first encounter Černý’s horse and rider sculpture that flips the country’s most sacred symbol upside down – literally. From there, you’ll weave through the New Town and Old Town’s medieval streets. As you walk, I’ll tell you how this rebel artist has transformed his city’s identity by sneaking contemporary art into UNESCO-protected historic streets, creating pieces that make you laugh, think, and sometimes scratch your head. You’ll also hear about breakthrough pieces that catapulted the artist to fame on both the local and international scene – naturally, through scandal.
You’ll catch a glimpse of the Statue of Saint Wenceslas Riding an Upside-Down Dead Horse, a striking and satirical artwork suspended inside the Lucerna Palace. Please note that entry to view the statue inside the building is not included in this tour.
You’ll pass by the Franz Kafka – Rotating Head by David Černý, a large kinetic sculpture that reflects Kafka’s layered identity through its moving metallic segments. Please note that entry to the installation area or any related activities is not included in this tour.
You’ll spot David Černý’s Lettergirl VH, a distinctive public artwork that adds a touch of whimsy to the streetscape. Please note that entry to any nearby venues or related installations is not included in this tour.
You’ll pass by *Butterfly Effect* by David Černý, a dynamic public installation that showcases the artist’s signature style. Please note that entry to the installation area or any related activities is not included in this tour.
You’ll catch a glimpse of *Man Hanging Out*, David Černý’s striking sculpture of Sigmund Freud suspended high above the street. Please note that entry to any nearby buildings or viewing areas isn’t included in this tour.
You’ll pass by David Černý’s *Pink Tank*, a boldly repainted Soviet-era tank that sparked nationwide debate and became an iconic piece of Prague’s contemporary art history. Please note that entry to the site or any related activities isn’t included in this tour.
