Copenhagen’s Langelinie Pavillonen tells an unexpected story of connection between two ancient monarchies: Denmark and Japan.
On this self-guided walking tour along the picturesque promenade and waterfront, you’ll learn how a Japanese baker’s love for Danish pastries led to 200 Sakura trees being gifted to Copenhagen, creating a living link between these geographically distant nations.
You’ll stroll through Langelinie Park, where the annual Copenhagen Sakura Festival celebrates Japanese culture, before making your way to the harbour to see historical monuments marking Denmark’s naval history.
Beneath a peaceful grove of cherry trees, I’ll guide you in a mindfulness exercise where you’ll engage all five senses, transforming a simple walk into a deeply personal experience.
Let me show you how this busy waterside neighborhood can also be experienced from a mindful perspective. You’ll gain unique insights into Copenhagen through the two kingdoms’ connection. Enjoy!
You will pass by a modern cylindrical structure that blends nicely with the natural environment around it. This building houses the underground exhibits of the Danish Resistance Museum about the heroes who helped resist the invasion of Denmark by nazi Germany during WWII.
You’ll be strolling on Churchill Park, located by the 17th-century citadel of Copenhagen. This park is a “thank you” note to the British troops who liberated Denmark in WWII.
This is the Gefion Fountain, created by Danish sculptor Anders Bundgaard. It depicts the legendary origin of Sealand, Denmark’s largest island—the very land you’re standing on.
You are looking at the monument of Frederik IX, the current king's grandfather. He’s the first monarch since the time of Christian IV - the king who started the construction of the citadel in the 1600s- who could sail a ship.
This is the Langelinie Park and the location of the Ivar Huitfeldt Memorial. The monument is placed at the largest cherry blossom grove here on Langelinie Promenade. This park is the main location of the Copenhagen Sakura Festival, an event celebrating the blooming of these trees and Japanese culture.
The monument, by Svend Rathsack and Ivar Bentsens, was inaugurated in 1928 and is here to remember the sailors of the Danish merchant fleet who lost their lives at sea during WWI.
The Little Mermaid is definitely the most popular inhabitant of Copenhagen. She's been sitting on her rock here since 1913 and has become the symbol of Copenhagen.
Kastellet is one of the best-preserved fortifications from the 1600s in Northern Europe. It began to be built in the time of King Christian IV to defend Copenhagen from a possible attack from the Swedes, Denmark’s arch-enemies for many centuries.
