About this experience

Coming to Blankenberge for the most beautiful coast in Belgium and its emblematic Belgium’s Pier, you will also be able to take advantage of the opportunity to discover its hidden gem of Old Town, seemingly kept a secret by the high Atlantic Wall from World War II. The charming little town inherited a rich cultural heritage from the golden years in its heyday of the Belle Époque (French for “the beautiful age”) between the late 19th century and early 20th century, including the vintage Flemish Renaissance Old Town Hall, the tranquil Neo-Romanesque Saint Roch Church, the authentic fishermen’s house of Majutte's House from the 18thcentury, and the vibrant Paravang Promenade where traditional festivals are often hosted.

Detailed itinerary

1

Start at the most emblematic icon of the Belgian coast: Belgium Pier, one of the only two piers at the Atlantic and North Sea coasts of Europe. The 20th-century structure sticking out into the sea for nearly half a kilometer offers strollers a chance to indulge in the spectacular views in all directions, salty air, delightful breeze, and calming sound of the beautiful sea.

2

Then, join the Sea Wall Promenade, which has a special sense of history attached to it: the raised pathway was part of the Atlantic Wall, constructed by the German Nazis. The wall has now transformed into an atmospheric walkway dotted with meandering tourists and entertainment centers, such as Casino Blankenberge, and thus a great spot for people-watching and soaking up the vibes.

3

Proceed to descend the Bakkersstraat Stairs, leading to the city below. The flight of steps, of which there are only three throughout the town, is attractive in its own right. Built in the Belle-Epoque era, the art movement that took over the city during the late 19th century, the exquisite stonework was decorated with majestic statues of griffins guarding the entrance to the Old Town.

4

Just a stone’s throw away is the oldest building at the heart of the historic quarter: the Old Town Hall. Built in the 17th century, the stunning brick building featuring flower-adorned windows served as a guild house until the 20th century when it became too small for the city and got converted into an exhibition venue, which adds an artistic touch to its vintage Flemish Renaissance appearance.

5

On the next step, stop by Saint Roch Church. Also dating from the Belle Époque era, the imposing church was erected to seat both the local community and tourists when the city became a popular holiday destination. Secluded by a lovely garden, the religious hub of the Old Town is flooded with a tranquil ambiance perfectly complementing its quaint Neo-Romanesque appearance.

6

Continue to pass by Majutte's House, the oldest fisherman's house on the Belgian coast, dating to the 18th century when the town was a peaceful, quiet place without the daunting presence of the Atlantic wall. The well-preserved cottage is now a bar displaying nostalgic items of those bygone days.

7

After the long walk, rewind and enjoy the views over the harbor and the beach at the stylish Paravang Promenade. Located in front of the spacious Leopold Park, the Belle Époque structure with its splendid Neo-Gothic capony is the venue of frequent festivals celebrating fishing and maritime traditions, and thus favorite meeting point in the city for tourists and locals alike.
