Detailed itinerary

1

Explore many different architectural styles while riding throughout the town of Carmel-By-The-Sea.

2

See the oldest amphitheater west of the Rockies, be inspired to catch a show, and hear the origin story of Carmel as we know it today, founded by artists of all types, built on community by two men named Frank.

3

The Hansel and Gretel houses in Carmel are the original life-size doll houses built simply because a man loved a doll-maker. The dozen on this block are private residences, but there's many others in town that are now shops and restaurants that your guide can point out.

4

Passing by the historic cottages in Carmel, in one block we see 6 of these cute fairy tale cottages built by local architect Hugh Comstock. For true lovers of this style, we can climb another steep hill to see 5 more.

5

The park is Carmel's central gathering place for outdoor events. A great place to have a little picnic or get away from downtown and enjoy the quaint koi pond nestled in the corner of the park. And no dogs allowed!

6

Carmel's first ever hotel, blending historic splendor and modern comfort. The hotel was built in 1889 as Hotel Carmelo in the location of Devendorf Park in the style of an elegant country inn, with wood from the old Tivoli Opera House in San Francisco.

Sixteen years later, as the town developed and grew, it was time for a big move.

The Hotel Carmelo was on its way to a new home, four blocks down Ocean towards the beach. The North wing was dismantled, and the main building was rolled along pine logs down the rugged, dirt road.

Within a year, the hotel was refitted and enlarged with a stable and a sun room looking out to the sea. With the help of M.J. Murphy, a local contractor, the hotel was reborn as the Pine Inn.

7

This bronze sculpture figure by George Wayne Lundeen is called The Valentine. It was installed in the First Murphy Park in 1994. This is a great place to stop for a picture while some in the group use the restroom before we head along the beachfront.

8

The first Murphy House in Carmel, California is a historic Craftsman style home built in 1902. It features a low-pitched gable roof, wide eaves, and exposed rafters, as well as a cozy, comfortable interior with hardwood floors, fireplace mantels, and built-in cabinets. The house is located in a quiet neighborhood a short walk from downtown Carmel and is a beloved landmark in the community. The house is currently being used as the location for the Carmel Heritage Society.

9

The Cottage of Sweets has been Carmel's candy shop since 1959. For the best tasting treats on the west coast, return here.

10

The Golden Bough Playhouse is a historic two-story theatre which includes a conventional 300-seat theater in the front and a more intimate, 150-seat circle theater in the back.

11

Very cute little fairy tale houses nestled among the trees add to the charm of Carmel.

12

At the base of Ocean Avenue, Carmel Beach is a beautiful white, sandy beach backed by Gowen Cypress trees and is known for surfing, dog-walking & sunsets. It's one of the most iconic spots on California's Central Coast and is rated one of America's top beach towns.

13

The most beautiful and iconic one way road in Carmel with jaw-dropping ocean views.

14

Passing by the beautiful Carmel beach, be sure to take lots of photos!

15

Mrs. Clinton Walker House, also known as Cabin on the Rocks, is located on Carmel Point. It has the appearance of a ship with a bow cutting through the waves. The house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1948 and completed in 1951 for Mrs. Clinton Della Walker of Pebble Beach. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

The house, an example of Wright's organic architecture, is built on granite boulders, uses the local Carmel-stone, and has a roof the color of the sea that is shaped to resemble the bow of a ship. It is the only Frank Lloyd Wright house that overlooks the ocean. Mrs. Clinton Walker told Wright she wanted a house “as durable as the rocks and as transparent as the waves." The house has a view of the Carmel Bay and Pebble Beach.

16

The Tor House and Hawk Tower are reminiscent of ancient Irish stone towers. The English style cottage garden is rich in color, texture and fragrance. Experience the atmosphere that inspired some of America's finest poetry by original resident Robinson Jeffers and family.

17

Butterfly House, is a Mid-century modern house located on Carmel Point. Due to its unique wing-shaped roof, this building is commonly referred to as the Butterfly House. The house was designed and built by architect Francis W. Wynkoop.

Featured in Architectural Digest Magazine, this is arguably one of the most expensive homes in Carmel, hitting the real-estate market in 2023 for $40 million.

18

An enclave for wildlife right where the mouth of our Carmel River meets the sea.

19

On Carmel Bay, the mile-long beach features a bird sanctuary in a lagoon (just before the Carmel River empties into the sea) featuring a wide variety of waterfowl and song birds, and provides for scenic panoramic views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a federal marine protected area and Point Lobos on of our most iconic parks.

20

This stunning inn is known for its beautiful gardens. The inn itself is surrounded by picturesque homes.

21

The historic Mission Ranch sits on 22 acres with spectacular views of Point Lobos, Carmel River Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Once one of the first dairies in California, the rich history of this 1800’s ranch was preserved and restored by former Carmel mayor, Clint Eastwood.

22
Stop 22

The crown jewel of the California Missions. We stop at the gate to the courtyard where you can get a great picture of this historic landmark....one of California's oldest existing structures. Your guide will share some informational stories from its early history while you take in the beautiful building and grounds.
