L'Etna è il più alto vulcano attivo terrestre della placca euroasiatica. È stato dichiarato patrimonio dell’umanità dall’Unesco. Partendo dal villaggio di Nicolosi, salirai verso la sua cima attraverso vigneti e vallate fatte di lava stratificata. A un certo punto, ti ritroverai in un paesaggio “lunare”.
A circa duemila metri di altezza, raggiungerai i Monti Silvestri, due crateri inattivi. Il cratere inferiore è facilmente accessibile e si può anche entrare al suo interno.
Se te la senti, puoi provare anche l'escursione al cratere superiore. È più faticosa e richiede una piccola scalata, ma ne vale la pena: una volta in cima, vedrai il cratere inferiore con i suoi colori rossastri e, in lontananza, il Golfo di Catania.
